Anchored in the rich storytelling of the Black freedom struggle, the Southern Pilgrimage immerses participants in the past, places, and the stories of people who have shaped the centuries-long fight for civil rights and human dignity. This transformative experience highlights the resilience and resistance of freedom seekers who persevered in the face of violent racism and oppression.
objectives:
1) To uncover, through historical events, the profound and far-reaching impact of racism in shaping and distorting the lives of all people—both people of color and white individuals.
2) To examine the enduring patterns of violence, resistance, and resilience that have defined the nation's struggle with race and racial justice throughout history.
3) To draw clear connections between the nation’s racialized history and the influence it continues to exert on contemporary social and political policies.
4) To explore and define our individual and collective roles in dismantling racism, fostering accountability within ourselves, our communities, and the institutions we engage with.
participants will:
- Visit museums and memorials central to the Black freedom struggle.
- Hear firsthand accounts from freedom fighters and local historians.
- Reflect on powerful narratives from songs, podcasts, novels, and children’s literature.
- Examine scripture and its call to justice.
- Engage in interactive exercises and daily debrief sessions to deepen understanding.
