This summer, The Center for Restorative Justice is hosting a transformative six-day journey through the Deep South for high school students, tracing the legacy of Emmett Till and the Black Freedom Struggle. Students will experience historical sites and museums and encounter “living legends” and “foot soldiers” from the civil rights movement. This is more than a history trip—it’s an opportunity for students to engage in deep reflection, critical conversations, and personal growth to become faith-rooted advocates for racial justice.
dates: June 21 - 27, 2025.
locations: Jackson and Money, MS; Memphis, TN; Birmingham and Montgomery, AL.
cost: $750 per person. Upon acceptance, a nonrefundable deposit of $100 will be required.
objectives:
Historical Education: Provide students with a deep, immersive understanding of the Black freedom struggle, by visiting key sites, engaging with historians, hearing firsthand accounts from movement veterans, group debriefs, and embodied soul care that addresses the social, emotional and spiritual elements of each participant.
Faith-Based Reflection: Connect the biblical call to justice with the lessons of the Black Freedom Struggle, encouraging students to see racial justice as an expression of their faith.
Youth Empowerment: Develop the next generation of leaders by equipping students with the knowledge and biblical moral courage to challenge racial injustice in their communities.
Action & Engagement: Inspire students to translate learning into action, equipping them with tools to advocate for justice in their schools, churches, and beyond.
students will:
- Visit museums and memorials central to the Black freedom struggle.
- Hear firsthand accounts from civil rights veterans and local historians.
- Reflect on powerful narratives from songs, podcasts, novels, and children’s literature.
- Examine scripture and its call to justice.
- Engage in interactive exercises and daily debrief sessions to deepen understanding.
